Founded in 1922, Dumfries and Galloway Fine Arts Society is one of the oldest art societies in the country and amongst its founding members were Jessie M. King, her husband E. A. Taylor, and Chris J. Fergusson. Early members included E.A. Hornel and Charles Oppenheimer and our records show that F.C.B. Cadell was a regular exhibitor in the 1920s.

Today the D & G Arts society has around 300 members and each year, the society arranges a winter programme of demonstrations and workshops given by professional artists, and a summer programme of workshops in different media. Members include amateurs of all levels, and non-painters who enjoy the talks and demonstrations, as well as many professional artists. DAGFAS are delighted to welcome new members at any time of year

Up to date news of the society can be found online at

It’s always fun to be hosting the fine arts society. I enjoy seeing the great mix of work that comes from the members and having a show like this at this time of year of course offers opportunities to acquire affordable original works of art as festive gifts

Saturday November 3rd sees the opening of a new exhibition of works by

Melville Brotherston

We are excited to welcome well known local artist Melville Brotherston to Ottersburn once again.

Melville has been a regular exhibitor at Ottersburn in the past and has shown some of his work in last year’s exhibitions at the gallery but this is the first solo show by the Moniaive artist since the opening of Ottersburn under new ownership in 2017.

Art lovers will see familiar scenes of Moniaive and the landscapes from around the artist’s home but also something different as Melville offers for the first time several new works showing his love of the seas and skies of Madeira. He says:

"For this exhibition I have produced bright, colourful paintings inspired by my recent trips to Madeira. The intensity of light, colour of plants and soil, as well as the rugged mountains and coasts are strongly contrasted with the quiet glens around Moniaive and the Solway coast."

Melvilles lives and works in Moniaive where he paints full time and privately tutors drawing and painting.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 3rd November 2018 with a preview evening on Friday 2nd at 6pm

Exhibition runs until 24th November
